As you all know, here at Motion Software we are all about remote work. Last week we dedicated our article to a question we often get asked – How to secure a life-changing remote job? Following the advice included in the article, today we are taking it one step further by sharing a real life-changing story. We are talking to our Product Designer – Marina Ilieva about her view on working remotely, the advantages and challenges it brings, and why it’s her preferred way of working.
Tell us a little bit about yourself and your position in the company.
Hey there, I’m Marina, a product designer in Motion Software for the past 4 years. I am so lucky and happy to be one of the first employees and to be able to see how the company grows and expands through the years.
Was it always your goal to work remotely and is this your first remote position?
Working remotely was never my goal but having the freedom to work from anywhere I want is just so much better than a 9-to-5 office job.
I like to switch sights – it gets me in condition, motivates me, makes me inspired, productive and creative.
How did your journey at Motion Software begin?
My first steps in design began when I joined the Full creative program in SoftUni. For about 6 months I had the chance to meet inspiring people who were in the design industry for ages. It felt like I finally found what I will do with all my heart.
The difference between doing something you don’t like and doing the right thing is vast. It’s just that you want more and more because the gratification is so huge that it almost feels like an addiction.
Well, this is how I felt about design and Motion Software back in 2017.
What do you like most about the company?
- the rhythm – it is very dynamic, you can rarely end up being bored;
- the people – huge variety of interesting professionals with different interests which creates a great atmosphere;
- the support – I feel encouraged to improve myself in every field I want which inspires and motivates me;
What is your ideal work setting?
Spacious house in the mountains, creative atmosphere, huge library, silence.
Are there any challenges to working remotely?
Working remotely adds great value to me but sometimes I miss communicating with my team in person. It is very important to have regular meetings in the real world as well because you catch up faster, you align better and the communication is much smoother.
How about the advantages?
The flexibility of being able to build your own routine is awesome. I am much more dedicated to my work when I have the freedom to choose when and where to work from. The feeling you are not entangled to the desk definitely makes you better at what you do.
What does a typical day look like for you?
I am an early bird and I prefer to spend the first hours of my day in the park with my bike or doing yoga. This definitely helps me be more energized and focused during the day. Afterwards, I do a quick shower, a fresh smoothie, and may the dailies begin. Till noon I have mostly meetings but I tend to block my afternoons so I can spend some quality time working on my tasks.
What passions outside of work do you enjoy because of this lifestyle?
Travelling, hiking, snowboarding, and many more… I am a very curious person who seeks new adventures all the time.
Do you think remote work is something that more people should try?
Well, I hope my experience working remotely is of help to you but my advice would be: Try it yourself because this is the way to see if it works for you 🙂
